It was so much fun crocheting cowls today at Yellow Umbrella's first ever crochet class, held at the awesome Rail River Folk School... We will defiantly be doing more workshops in the future!

On a side note... It's Dec 10 and we don't have any snow in northern MN... What's up with that?! 15 days till Christmas... Let's hope it's a white one :)

Hey All!
Wow it's been way too long since I've posted. Life has been overwhelmingly crazy with the store, Yellow Umbrella brand items, and family. I love it though.

Asher started crawling and getting into everything! Yay!

This is a little late-Asher at 8 months, he's 9 months now.

Jen and I have been making our products for other amazing stores. So most of our free time is spent creating.

I dyed my hair after many, many months of my roots showing. I went with a auburn red. I love it!

I bought an amazing pair of vintage glasses and couple years ago and got them the right prescription this week.

I was feeling kind of blah about my look, so it feels amazing to a have a fresh new one!

Thrifty Finds

So it turns out lugging around a car seat while thrifting is a bit more challenging than I thought.. But I managed to get out and about this past week and I thought I would share some of my favorite finds:

I collect little vintage deer... I have similar deer to these already but they are just regular ol tan and brown.. so I was super excited when I came across these yellow and pink ones....

I love how vibrant the colors are..

and the pretty rhinestone eyes!

I just love vintage Christmas decorations... I especially like finding PINK ornaments so these three pink and gold lovelies had to come home with me!

My newest vintage crush is baby/ little girl things because I never had a reason to buy them before so its a whole new section of the thrift stores to explore...

I just LOVE this vintage handmade whale dress!

I found an itty bitty shoe box at a children's clothing sale... then I saw it said Minnetonka and I got reeeaaally excited... I love moccasins and have really wanted to get Millie a tiny pair...

When I opened the box these tiny pink beaded mocs were greeting me! They are so cute!!!

Little Ones

Well it true what they say about time going so much faster when you have kids! It feels like I just gave birth yesterday... but over a month has gone by already! Here are some overdue pics of our sweet little girl Millie:

Her eyes were wide open right after delivery... we could tell that she recognized our voices right away and she began to study our faces! Such a special moment for me and Jon.

Millie weighed in at 7lbs 6oz

She always kicked and made ripples in the water when i bathed while pregnant... so it was no shocker to find that she looooves bath time!

She especially loves getting her hair washed!

I just love her yawns.

Yet another bath time photo.. She gets so wide eyed when we pour warm water over her.

I have a whole new appreciation for parents... Millie is a very good baby but man parenting is a lot of work!

Asher has not been sleeping the greatest. He thinks that he needs to eat all night long, like he's starving!

I'm not ready to just let him cry yet either. So we shall see how he does tonight and maybe I will give Andy a turn. :)

Andy and I had the last two days off from the store. We spent most of our time outside with the boys enjoying the unusually warm fall weather.

Hey Everyone! It's been crazy in the Yellow Umbrella world. Jen & Jon had a baby girl, named Millie Clara Pomp. She was born Sept. 12th. She's cutest baby!!!

I'm sure Jen will share lots of photos soon. For now she is just enjoying her precious little girl.

As for Yellow Umbrella we have geared up for fall. Yellow Umbrella now sells goods from 80 different artists. Wow!

Jen and I's Yellow Umbrella brand Jewelry in now available in Anaheim, CA in the cutest store, Nest Vintage and Handmade.

Yellow Umbrella brand will also be in the NxMW Craft Spectacular in Grand Forks, ND. It will be November 19th. If you are in the area or not, come check it out. There will be tons of amazing artists and must haves.

We get to meet Millie (our baby girl) in approx. 18 more days! Jon and I are so excited to start our little family! I have had the itch to make her some things this past week so I thought I would share a couple of them (and a special handmade gift from her grandma).

This is a little hat that I crocheted.

This quilt was made for Mille by my mom! If you look really close you can see that the yellow fabric has little dragonfly designs and all over the quilt are little dragonflies stitched in.

My mom also included some of this owl fabric that she picked up.

It was just enough fabric to make a cradle sheet! I love how it turned out. Here is the tutorial I followed.

The start to our new window display using flashcards in a bunting style.

Any ideas for what we should do in the bottom half of the windows??? We were hoping to have enough flashcards to cover the whole window but ran out.

New Dino art for Emerson's room. I hand cut the stegosaurus out of plywood and then added vintage wallpaper. Yeah, I pretty much love how it turned out!

I love to knit and I love to shop handmade! I learned to knit 10 years ago when I was in the Peace Corps in Russia. I bought some yarn at the market and the little old lady who lived next door to me taught me to knit. I knit many scarves in Russia and when I returned I took a few classes and have been knitting ever since! I love designing new things, everything in my shop is an original design. I also love to shop for vintage items to include in my knitting, especially buttons.

Nursery (before)

Our nursery is going to be in this nook that lies directly upstairs between our bedroom and the guest bedroom.

This space still has the dark paneling that was very popular back in the 70's... So I am looking forward to brightening up the room with either a soft pink or a light aqua paint color. I am hoping it really helps this space seem roomier... anything really will be an improvement! =)

This pic shows the door to the downstairs staircase, the door to the left is the guest room and the door to the right is a walk-in closet that has already accumulated many baby clothes due to some awesome hand me downs (thank you Sarah and Angie!) and early morning garage sale finds!

This is a built in shelf is my favorite feature of the space and I can't wait to display some special vintage toys I have been collecting.

This wave patterned vintage carpet is pretty sweet too.

Kenai sure likes it!

The drab mini blinds have to go and I'm pretty sure that this amazing vintage fabric will be curtains and the inspiration for the whole space. I have just begun to prime the space because its been too hot and humid to even think about painting...I'll be sure to post pics of the continuing transformation!

Kenai isn't sure what he thinks about having to share his house with a baby...

We just got in a new artist(Emily Rohan) and she has the most amazing sterling and stone jewelry!

My name is Emily. I am a 30 year old wife, mommy, domestic goddess, and artist. Making beautiful and unique jewelry creations is now and has for a long time been a passion of mine. I was fortunate enough to have a high school art teacher who was also a jeweler so I was able to really learn the basics of the trade from a master for free! It was something I loved but I just assumed it would always be "out of my realm of possability". I graduated high school, got married, moved away, had kids, moved back, attended an art fair, saw someone's jewelry booth... and then it hit me... "I can do this, I WANT to do this! WHY AM I NOT DOING THIS?!!??" And that was it. I ordered all my tools and supplies and created myself a jewelry-making paradise in the corner of my basement. Once I had a few things made, I ventured out into the world of "I think I'll try to sell this, gee I hope people like it!" The pieces I create are the pieces I always wished I could find in shops or at art fairs but never found. I hope you love my stuff as much as I do! I think you will...

Family Trip!

We took a little family trip to the Twin Cities this past weekend. It was so nice to spend time with the boys and to see friends. Here are some pics from the trip.

Crocheting on the 4 hour drive. Asher is such a good traveling baby. Driving puts him right to sleep. We had movies and games to play for Emerson.

Emerson sporting his Twins gear. He liked watching the game with binoculars. The boys made it to the 7th inning before they needed to leave.

The temps were so hot while we were down in the Cities. We spent most of our time in the pool to keep cool. It was such a great time. I can't wait for another family getaway.

I have been searching etsy for a cute and cuddly baby plush toy for a while now and today I came across Little Sidekick! I just love that on one side you get a pretty fabric and the other has soft minky fabric for your baby to cuddle up with. Mistic Berry Farm

Jon surprised me with a strawberry picking date yesterday!

Strawberries are my favorite fruit and these berries are the best!

The Mistic Berry Farm is awesome because you get to pick your own strawberries right off the plant!

So yummy!

When we got home I made an awesome fruit dip for them

(these berries are so sweet just the way they are but I couldn't resist)

The recipe is super simple...just two ingredients in fact!

1 (8oz) Cream Cheese

1 (7.5 oz) jar of Marshmallow Fluff

Just whip the cream cheese and marshmallow fluff together and chill.

And your all set to dip your favorite fruits!

Here are some projects Andy and I have done or are in the middle of......

This tree slice patio area is a work in progress. We are using 3" tree slices cut from mainly birch, popple and a few maple mixed in. Our hope is to have the whole area look similar to the close up shot below.

This is how I would like it to look everywhere. I plan to make the stump area a sculpture garden with my my mom and I's metal works.

This is a sidewalk and planter box project Andy and I did three years ago. For the planter boxes we used pieces of slate to hold the dirt for the day lillies. To make our sidewalk we constructed wood frames out of 2x4's. Placed them in the pattern we wanted and poured cement into the molds. This is what we created.

Tree Sweater: Progress Report

Above is the tree that will soon be the coziest tree in all of Bemidji!

I decided on a yellow, orange, cream, pink, and lemongrass green color scheme... I had lots of Lion Brand Thick & Quick yarn scraps in those colors to use up, so it worked out really well!

As of today I have crocheted the trunk piece as well as 3 of the four branches! I am hoping to finish up crocheting the remaining piece tonight and possibly install the tree sweater tomorrow... (weather permitting) I will be sure to post pics of the transformation!

My artwork is the culmination of elements from my daily life, varying from the cute to bizarre. Found art, little doodles, scans and photos are frankensteined together to create an intense and alluring graphic pallet, through the use of screen printing, street art and stencils.

I really get the most satisfaction from a piece when ink is laying down on a surface for the first time. Most of my printing skill is self taught from much trial and error. Taking any idea, no matter how freakishly weird it is, into a tangible state helps me close one chapter in life and move on to another.

Adopt a Garden

So on Tuesday a lady came in wondering if we would like to adopt a small city flower bed across the street from the Yellow Umbrella gift shop. I love to garden and have been so busy with the store that I havent been able to do much of it at home lately...so whats better than a mini garden across the street? It will be nice to get some fresh air and play in the dirt throughout the week while I'm "working".

Its a bit neglected looking right now but I can totally see the potential! It has a good size crab apple tree in the center with a shrub bush, some scattered lily of the valley, and a random variety of lily (i think). I found myself wanting to do something really special in this space that would sort of reflect the fun crafty creative feel that is Yellow Umbrella...and then it hit me...MAKE A TREE SWEATER!

Bemidji does not have a knitted/crocheted tree that I know of but many places are allowing and even encouraging fiber artists to take over the town... Blanton Museum of Art (Austin, TX) recently organized a huge tree sweater display that clothed 99 trees just outside of the museum called Knitted Wonderland.

Then I started to wonder if Bemidji would embrace this type of art expression...I finally worked up the courage and called the lady in charge of the gardens...and she said go for it!!! I am so excited about this project and will begin crocheting today!... I'll be sure to keep you posted on the progress!

Three years ago today one of the best things in our lives happened.....Emerson was born!

Three years has gone by so fast! Emerson is growing up to be such an awesome person. I am so blessed to be his mommy:)

Today if it's nice we are planning to take Emerson to Animal Land(petting zoo) and McDonalds to celebrate his special day. He will have his dinosaur party with friends and family this weekend.

We met Emily briefly at the Lot 6 Art Fair this past weekend and were thrilled when she came in and wanted to showcase her work with us! Emily uses ink applied with a brush on wood board... She is a BSU student and explained that canvases were not in her budget so she needed to get creative...her dad is a cabinate maker so the ink found its way to the scrap boards... the woodgrain compliments her work perfectly!....and YES they are originals!!! Her work is so amazingly detailed you need to come see it in person!

Hollie Chastain is a full-time found paper and collage artist in Chattanooga, Tennessee. A creative spirit and early interest in art led to dabbling in watercolor, pottery, and glass before settling into colllage as a medium of choice. Influenced by nature and fairy tales, she lets water stains, scribble and natural aging play into her pieces. The subject of the piece is often influenced by the materials as opposed to building around a sketch or idea. She creates a world of adventure and secrets open for the viewer's interpretation.

Hello...

We have been so busy getting our new inventory entered, tagged, and barcoded that we haven't had a chance to blog for a little while... We had Jon design our new Yellow Umbrella hang tags and just got them today and have been busy bees punching holes, cutting strings, and distributing them to our inventory... its so fun to see barcodes on everything! We went through our only roll of barcode labels today so we are hoping that our shipment of the rest of the rolls gets here tomorrow! Andy cut out some more wood letters and clouds for around the store and a yellow umbrella for our storefront sign. Steve and Joyce (Jon and Andy's parents) stopped in and helped shampoo the kids play room as well as clean up our back ally outdoor space. We also had many local and visiting artists bring in new artworks and contracts, so today was very productive!

I am excited to announce we have tentatively set our opening date for June 4th!!! The space has really come along. All the display fixtures have a place and Monday we are going to start the inventory process. We are changing to a POS system to simplify and speed up the check process. Cant wait to use a scanner to ring a sale!!
